Pretty and well-preserved?
“Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming … WOW! What a ride!” Hunter S. Thompson
Okay… so there you are, lying in a hospital or hospice bed with tubes going in you and tubes going out. Now face it, if you live long enough it’s likely going to be you, it’s going to be me, it’s going to be all of us.
They say that your life flashes before your eyes as you are approaching the eternities. If it does, what will flash before yours? What kind of luggage will you have become? After all your body is a form of luggage that you carry around from birth to death.
Will you have the wrinkles, age spots, battle scars and brain callouses earned by a life worth living? Will you have a life lived to its fullest?
Or will you have regrets?
Will you wish that you had traveled more? Maybe climbed the pyramids in Egypt, snorkeled or went diving in Bora Bora?
Will you regret not snow skiing in Portillo Chile when it was summer in North America? Not taking that Alaskan cruise you always said you would do.
Will you sigh and wonder what it would have been like to see the giant redwoods, Death Valley, the Great Barrier Reef or Antarctica?
Will you regret not taking those dance or piano lessons, learning a different language from your own, or having the courage to ask that once in a lifetime person out on a date?
Or will you have tried to do some of these things, succeeding at some, failing at others? Will you have fulfilled at least some of your dreams and desires, some of which will leave physical, spiritual or even mental and real scars on your body luggage?
After all your life truly is a journey to the grave and your body is like a piece of luggage, luggage that conveys the actual journeys of your body, mind and spirit.
What will your luggage look like when you leave this world? Will it reflect a life well lived, one of fulfillment of many if not most of your hopes and dreams?
Will you be thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming …
WOW! What a ride!
I hope you will.
